# Why white identity text can turn gray in Gmail iPhone dark mode

Gmail iPhone dark mode does not simply display the HTML as written. It runs its own color transformation on email content. In dark header areas, Gmail may change light identity text to gray even when inline styles set the color to `#ffffff`.

## Why Contact Rows Behave Differently

Email, phone, and website values are real links. Gmail often treats link text differently from normal paragraph text, so contact rows can look correct while name, role, department, and company text are recolored.

* Identity text is normal HTML text.
* Contact text is usually anchor/link text.
* Gmail iOS dark mode rewrites normal light text more aggressively.
* Inline color locks such as `color:#ffffff!important` are not always enough.

## Important Limitation

If the exported HTML contains the correct styles but Gmail iPhone still changes the color, the final decision is being made by Gmail's renderer.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.subscripta.app/troubleshooting/gmail-ios-gray-text.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
