# How the Gmail iOS dark-mode protection works

The Copy HTML export includes scoped protection around white identity text on dark header backgrounds. It keeps the text as real HTML while adding the nested blend-mode wrappers used by the known Gmail iOS workaround.

## How It Works

1. The dark header cell keeps a fallback background color and a linear-gradient background image.
2. Only locked white identity text is wrapped.
3. The wrapper uses `mix-blend-mode:screen` and `mix-blend-mode:difference`.
4. Contact rows are left unchanged because they already behave correctly.

## Use This for Webmail

This is the best option when sending from Roundcube, Gmail web, or another webmail client that preserves the exported HTML.

## When Not to Use It

Use the Email Clients export instead when a desktop email app strips or rewrites advanced CSS. If a client removes only part of the blend-mode workaround, it can create visible artifacts.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.subscripta.app/troubleshooting/gmail-ios-dark-mode-protection.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
